Hello!

We are Andy and Via. We are passionate about plants, food, and growing towards a future of harmony between nature and humans. We believe that bringing plants closer to our lives and demystifying the magic of growing food and medicine is critically important in our modern world.

Andy

Andy’s journey with plants began in earnest when they moved to Vermont in 2020 to be with family during COVID. They had just graduated college, and while figuring out next steps during lockdown, read one of their professor’s books, Amanda Little’s The Fate of Food. Reading this book enmeshed in the Vermont landscape, abundant with small farms, they felt the call to better understand the climate catastrophe through the food system. They started working on small local farms and completed their first full season in 2021 at Ananda Gardens in Montpelier. Since then they have been learning about what it means to steward land, and the immense potential for climate healing that exists when we work together to resist capitalist incentives to deplete soil. With a desire to learn more in 2023, they completed the UVM Farmer Training Program where they would stay on in 2024 as an educator. In 2025 they helped grow vegetables at Khelcom Farm (a close friend’s operation) in Barre while completing the Holistic Orchard Apprenticeship at Lost Nation Orchard.

Via

Via is a naturalist, maker, and grower. She has a deep interest and knowledge about the cosystems of Vermont, and completed the Vermont Master Naturalist Tier II program in 2025. She has worked two planting seasons with the Intervale Conservation Nursery, and tended to the propagation and care of the tree saplings in the greenhouses. She also has experience with vegetable farming and fruit production, working at Common Roots Farm in South Burlington in 2024 and Lost Nation Orchard in 2025. Before farming she worked as a brewer at Foam Brewers where she kept a garden and used some of the herbs, along with foraged ingredients, to make beer. She graduated from Middlebury College in 2022 with a degree in Environmental Studies and Religion. She is a willow weaver and fiber artist. She loves to talk about weaving, fermenting, native trees, and creative climate solutions!

Why City Sprouts?

For so much of our lives, we have missed the call of the plants. We both grew up surrounded by suburban sprawl, Andy in Atlanta, GA and Via in Massachusetts. We never met folks who could share with us the importance of connecting with the natural world. Now that we’re working directly with plants, we know them as dear friends and see it as our mission to be a bridge for urban communities to get to know the magical gifts of working with plants. Whether it be the sprig of cilantro from the garden that adds the perfect finishing touch to your dish, or the rose shining in the sunlight that makes you actually stop and smell the roses, we believe these tiny moments of appreciation and connection with mother nature’s gifts are paramount for collective healing and moving forward into a climate friendly future. We all deserve to live in beautiful and abundant communities and what better place to start than turning our front lawns into pretty flowers?
